This blood test assesses the level of zonulin found in your bloodstream and the degree to which your gut lining has been compromised. Zonulin is a key biomarker for leaky gut (intestinal permeability), which has been associated with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), and other GI and systemic conditions.
In a healthy body, the tight junctions between cells maintain a closed system in the GI tract. However, the presence of certain medications, antibiotics, toxins, infections, and inflammatory particles such as gluten can lead to high levels of zonulin in the GI tract. This can cause the breakdown of the tight junctions, and lead to a leaky gut which in turn allows zonulin to get out into the bloodstream.
The level of zonulin in your blood tells us the degree of intestinal permeability and allows us to monitor the degree to which your gut is healing. Click here for a sample report of the Zonulin test.
