Sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin and which sources of health information are the most credible.
Below is the list of books I recommend reading as a starting point to gain a deeper understanding of your current state of health, and how to take it to the next level. These resources are steeped in clinical research and take the whole person into account. While I may not agree with every single point found in their pages, they are strongly aligned with how I view health and healing, and are a very reliable source of information.
I hope these resources will serve as a valuable launching point for you in your quest for a higher state of wellness.
Autoimmune Disease
Autoimmune Fix helps you understand the spectrum of autoimmune disease and the multiple causal factors involved in its development. You’ll learn how the symptoms associated with autoimmune disease can take years – and sometimes even decades – to develop, and how to recognize the early warning signs and act on them. Tom O’Bryan outlines the specific diet, lifestyle and environmental factors that can activate your unique genes and leave you vulnerable to developing an autoimmune disease, and provides you with a proactive plan so you can begin to reclaim your health.
Dr. Terry Wahls developed this protocol after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and conventional treatments failed her. She spent years researching the safest and most effective ways to reverse autoimmune disease which serve as the content of this book. This is a great resource for anyone who is suffering from an autoimmune condition and looking for a way to regain control of their health. Dr Wahls’ protocol is based on the paleo principles and provides you with easy to follow dietary and lifestyle modifications essential to achieving a state of remission.
This is one of the best books I’ve read on transformation and the “why” behind the things we do. I am a bigger believer that if we don’t understand our “why” any changes we make will be fleeting at best. James Clear has taken cutting edge concepts in neuroscience, psychology and biology, and distilled them down into a guide which shows you how to make good habits stick, and destructive habits a thing of the past.
The four agreements are simple but powerful tenets to help you life a better life: 1. Be impeccable with your word. 2. Don’t take anything personally. 3. Don’t make assumptions. 4. Always do your best. If you do nothing else with this book, read Chapter Two and learn how not to take anything personally. It’s a game-changer. It helps you see how much importance we place on other’s opinions of us, and how to break free of this.
This is an empowering guide to understanding the root causes involved in the development of Hashimoto’s Disease, and how to heal your thyroid and lower your antibody count. Dr. Wentz is a leading expert in thyroid dysfunction and has struggled with this disease herself. This book contains valuable thyroid testing information and protocols, and is full of realistic and actionable ways to begin healing.
Toxic is a great primer for anyone struggling with a chronic disease that never seems to improve, or whose underlying cause has their medical team stumped. Dr. Nathan explains the wide reaching, long term effects of environmental toxins on health and what exactly happens in the body due to exposure. He does a great job distilling down incredibly complex issues like Mold/Mycotoxity, Lyme Disease, Chemical Sensitivities and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome into something that’s understandable and actionable.
Dr. Walter Crinnion is one of the foremost experts in environmental toxins and their affects on health and the development of chronic disease. I had the privilege of studying with him in the years leading up to his passing and have yet to meet anyone as knowledgable or passionate about this topic. If you are having a hard time getting down to an optimal weight or experiencing symptoms that don’t make sense, it’s time to assess your total toxic burden.
